Hope has Fridays off this summer and today she decided to hang out with Graham downtown. He loves this Lion-shaped walker that my Aunt & Uncle gave him for Christmas last year but he doesn't have a lot of flat surface to walk with it in our house. Hope took the Lion downtown today and let him roam around the sidewalks in the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden. She sent me this image from her iPhone with him in front of the iconic "Nomade" statue.

Almost 11 months ago, my wife and I both quit our jobs in Indianapolis and moved to Des Moines. She was set to start classes at Drake Law but I wasn't quite sure how I would spend my time. Looking back, it's been a great year.

I've wanted to play around with Posterous for awhile now and was recently inspired to do something about it. My new site, Wood 2 Your Moms - Lite, will be a (hopefully) daily picture-blog where I take an image with my iPhone and post it via Posterous sweet email-to-post functionality.

The Little Book of Beards

It's pretty much a forgone conclusion that my young son, Graham, will one day have a beard. I had a beard off and on in high school (after I reached the point that I could grow one) and college and pretty much continuously since undergrad. In fact, the beard has become so much a part of me that when I asked my then-fiancé if I should shave it for the wedding, she said emphatically "no!" since a clean-shaven Geoff is not the Geoff she knew.

I always cringe a bit when people ask me: What do you do? Typically, it's a filler question. It's one of those you're required to ask when you meet someone new. If what they do is interesting, you'll ask follow up questions. I hate answering it.

It's not that what I do isn't interesting (if it wasn't, I wouldn't being doing it) it just doesn't fit into a simple box like "I'm a lawyer" or "I'm in insurance".

Early last week the news broke that the Big XII conference was sure to collapse and that Iowa State, along with Kansas, Kansas State, and Baylor had nowhere to go. Nebraska was set to go to the Big Ten (which happened) as was Mizzou (which didn't happen). Colorado was set for Pac 10 (which happened) as was the rest of the South Division (which didn't happen).

And, I thought the Saints were dirty...

However, the Vikes looked pretty darn good. I’m a homer but it certainly felt like the Vikings outplayed the Saints – only they kept turning the ball over which was ultimately the deciding factor. In fact, they turned it over 5 times! And the Saints gameplan was obviously to take Favre out (which they almost did) which was legal but felt dirty. The Saints racked up 3 unsportsmanlike penalties and a few others that looked like they should have been called.

Big Omaha 2010

David Hauser of Grasshopper opens up Big Omaha 2010. Photo by Malone & Co.Wow. Big Omaha was absolutely everything I expected and more. For those that don't know, Big Omaha is an entrepreneurial event put on by Silicon Prairie News in, well, Omaha. The idea is to bring together a bunch of entrepreneurially-minded folks excited about what they are doing and what they will do. Add in a bunch of speakers from across the country who have done exciting and inspiring things to generate discussion. Finish with a completely immersive, branded experience and you have Big Omaha.

It has officially been two months since I last ate meat which means that I accomplished the goal I set out upon on Saint Patrick's Day. I've decided not continue on as a "vegetarian", per se, but I will continue to minimize meat within my diet.
